I'm not sure, if it means that all taxes and charges are included in the price or that they have to added? In the second case, how much should I add? It mean taxes should be added to te price shown. So To be honest, one thing which I don't like about Singapore and I hope, there won't any other when I come there for the first time is confusing system of calculation of charges, fees, rates and prices.
I've got the feeling that you never know exactly, how much you have to pay at the end for certain product, service, etc. Singapore seems to be very modern city and I'm suprised that its legal system allow hotels, restaurants and shops to mislead their customers, or at least not to inform about ultimate price, including all taxes and charges. I can imagine myself walking around Singapore with calculator in order to check each time, what the final price is going to be ;-. It all started when I was searching for accommodation for our family of three 2 adults and 1 child.
It's so complicated to get the final price for such group, including extra bed and breakfast for kid. Of course, the easiest way is to choose a room for 3 adults, but why pay more, if there're certain children policies in most of hotels? The only problem is to find out, what are their rules Government tax - 7. In other words total price inclusive of taxes. Different from where I live, but in no way misleading or hard to comprehend. Yes, Singpore is indeed a modern city so you can be assured that establishments that provide a receipt do provide the proper total.
Do some places add extra charges, say for water, rice, etc without telling you? I usually assume they come with, but some ask and then you learn it was an additonal cost. That I hate That stated, feel free to bring a calculator and use it. Even better, make an exchange rate list and keep it with you so you can get an idea of the total cost.
Also, some of the larger stores like Tangs allow you to return for full refund. There are limitations like number of days etc. So, do like I do, and always ask if the item canbe returned. I do that at home and when abroad.
Also, I do believe that most hotel booking sites provide the total cost prior to finalizing the booking. Yes, some require that you provide your details and credit card info prior to listing the total, but I have never seen it, anymore, where one has to click "purchase" without the total being provided first and allowing the buyer to opt out.
I often just hit my back key and go back to the home page before I close out of the site. Just a thing of mine. But another security precaution is to simply clear your cookie cache after leaving the site. That is what I do And, feel free to contact your credit card provider to ensure no charge has been processed.
Schonefeld, you are right. I went one step to far when I wrote about "mislead" of customers. I'm sorry for this.
I don't see any reason, why common people should calculate on their own, what is the total cost of certain service. As I love to eat sushi, I searched today for reviews and offers regarding this type of food in Singapore.
From my point of view it's not normal that I must perform analysis of cost of food in restaurant. The reason for this is because service is optional, if you feel you did not get reasonable service, you are within your rights to reduce or pay no service.
This is getting conveluted. When I am in a restaurant and see the cost of an item on the menu I know that it is the price before taxes ahd service charge; be it in Singapore , Paris or some remote village. So, to expect to see a 'total' price per item in an eating establishment is just plain odd. On a menu in Singapore you will find a price per listed item or same as previous for in a store. That stated a consumer should expect to have to calculate the total cost of any purchase.
I know I have to whenever I make a purchase. Actualky I just jniw that there will be taxes added and live with that and the actual final cost The establishment lists. Skip to main content.
