So many sites make distressing labor intensive. Yours is not. And yes, distressing furniture does NOT have to be complicated. Do you always use a polyurethane after distressing?
I just did an old buffet in flat black but when I distressed it the areas are dull around the distressing compared to the rest of the piece. Thought perhaps the polyurethane would bring the color back to these areas but afraid to try without knowing. This is beautiful!
I went to your web site to see if you had worked with Chalk paints before. I am doing a few old pieces and was looking for the distressed look. Do you do it the same way with clear glaze after the base coat?

Have a newly stained antique. Top ok as legs are different wood and looks odd. Will that look ok? I have some furniture with a clear coat on it. Cheryl, I have personally painted right over clear coats before — but if you want to be safe, just give it a light sanding first, then wipe it down with the denatured alcohol I mentioned in the post.

Oct 11, · The dresser was in pristine shape, with drawers that glided perfectly, all of the original hardware in tact, and the finish in excellent condition. My sister wanted a gray dresser, but I couldn’t bear to paint over the entire piece, so I opted for a painted gray finish combined with a dark . Use a clean cotton cloth and dip it into the stain. Use the cloth to wipe the surface of your furniture with the stain. Apply it on all sides of the fixture then wipe off the stain immediately. The trick is to wipe off the stain while it is still wet. 1. Remove all hardward, strip the old stain off completely- every nook and cranny 2. Sand down for a smooth finish and then wipe off all sand dust 3. either paint or stain it black- this will take a few coats and it needs to be sanded in between each coat. Depending on the size of your furniture, it is not something that can be done in a day.

I also opt to do this when the dresser finish is in bad shape, or I wanted to lighten the wood. Option two is to use a product called gel stain that actually sits on top of the finished wood, but still retains the wood grain. This option works well over a finish that is completely intact, but it can only be used to darken the shade.
I chose to use gel stain for this dresser, because I wanted to go darker with the stain, and the finish was in beautiful shape when I started. For applying a product such as this one, I find that seeing it is the best way to understand the process. Check out my youngest daughter, the video bomber, in this one. It makes me laugh every time.
I love how it turned out. Now, I know that some would have preferred the more natural color, which is totally fine. Or, if I was putting this piece in my own home, I would have actually probably stripped it down completely and just put a clear coat, or maybe a super light white wash to lighten it up a bit more.
